By Olav Nortun, Chief Executive Officer, Thome Group
Welcome to our final TGN issue for the year. As you know we choose an overarching theme for each issue and this edition focuses on vetting.
Making sure our vessels are compliant with regards to statutory, regulatory and commercial requirements is an ongoing challenge. Inspections by various bodies can last from as little as 30 minutes to as long as 12 hours in some cases, so it is really important that everyone – both ashore and onboard- is aware of their responsibilities in keeping our fleet compliant.
It is all about teamwork and communication which is why the Thome Group performs its own periodic inspections on its vessels to check that everything is in order.
The Compliance to Safety Management System (SMS) is the best method to ensure a vessel remains inspection-ready at all times so familiarity with it is essential.
Ultimately, it is the Master of each vessel who has overall responsibility to ensure the SMS is effectively implemented onboard. Thome’s Management System contains detailed guidance on how to perform various operational tasks so familiarization with the checklists and any resulting action points need be carefully adhered to in order to avoid any observations or non-conformances during an inspection.
Delays caused by issues raised during an inspection could result in fines or voyage disruptions which ultimately have financial implications for the Thome Group, so it is so important that we prepare as much as we can in advance of any inspection to ensure nothing untoward is found.
Lastly, it is with great pleasure to share that Thome Group has won the “Excellence in Maritime Services/ Ship Management” at the Lloyd’s List Asia Pacific Awards 2019. The independent panel of judges considered a range of performance indicators including crew welfare, overall safety record, environmental initiatives, ship security, training, operational efficiency, cost control and a proven record of client satisfaction and we came out on top! We should all be proud of winning this accolade which recognises our excellent teamwork, dedication and commitment to be the industry’s first choice for maritime services and ship management.
As the festive season approaches I would like to thank all of you for your hard work and dedication during 2019 and look forward to your continued support in 2020.
Without your commitment the Thome Group would not be as successful as it is.
For those of you who will be working during the traditional festive break, I do hope that you will find the time to have a belated happy Christmas and New Year with your friends and families.
