Thome Group

Our PeopleMajor(Ret.) Harry Wee – Alternate Company Security OfficerHaving retired as "Navy Major" in rank with the Republic of Singapore Navy(RSN), I have chanced upon the opportunity by Thome Ship Management for the designation of Alternate Company Security Officer(ASCO). Prior to retiring from the Navy I held the Commanding Officer of the chartered Specialised Cargo & Ro-Ro Ship by the Navy. This was the job that gave me all the exposure of a merchant ship as I had to ensure that all mission and training related issues are resolved and also ensuring that the ship was in all aspects complying with ISM, ISPS requirements and also operationally ready for all our operation. The job also gave me an experience that was very valuable to me i.e. working with crew of different nationalities, culture and background. Being a Naval Officer by training, I had held shipboard appointments from Navigating Officer to Operations, Executive and then Commanding Officer of a Training Ship for Officer Cadet. Upon completion of my tour of duty at sea, I held several appointments ashore taking charge of training in the Naval School and also as an Operation Controller of the Navy's Operation and Surveillance Centre. I was given the opportunity to join Thome and this has allowed me to further contribute and transfer my expertise from the Navy to the Merchant Marine sector, while my objective is to not only to strengthen but also to enhance the Security System & Safety System of Thome. I felt proud working and participating in the growth of the company and thank Thome for always nurturing their employees by constantly upgrading the skill and increasing exposure in the learning experience.
Christian Hestehave/Management Trainee/Group ProcurementWhen I first arrived at Thome I was immediately enthused by the company’s management culture; a highly performance-oriented hands-on approach, but always with a great sense of care and respect for the employees. As a member of the purchasing department, I am involved in projects that span all the Thome departments and I work with many talented people across the Group. It is truly inspiring when you form cross department teams all with professional backgrounds, and from different cultures but aiming to reach a common goal on a project. Describing my work at Thome, the best part would be having a high level of responsibility combined with a high level of inclusion in many diverse projects. Letting this experience evolve and grow within a solid company structure makes for a dynamic and well informed reference base from which I can face new challenges head on. Ashish Malik/Fleet Group Manager (Fleet Group 5)I joined Thome Ship Management in 2009 as Assistant Fleet Group Manager and later rose in the ranks to become a Fleet Group Manager in 2010, handling a fleet of 20 chemical vessels. I am the main point of contact for our principals and along with my team of multinational superintendents and supporting staff, we take care of the daily management of the vessels. My fleet of vessels consists of stainless steel tankers, oil and bitumen / asphalt tankers. Thome offers varied opportunities for professional growth and personal development. The working atmosphere is very pleasant and the co-operation among the office personnel is quite close-knit. The multinational environment broadens one's horizon and the autonomy of work offers sufficient opportunities for all to prove themselves. A modern company, Thome is a pioneer in using various IT systems to facilitate day to day operations. Khirsty Mae O. Acre /Group Cadet SupervisorWorking ashore with Thome somehow came as a surprise. I commenced my Cadetship in 2006 and became a qualified Third officer in 2010. I then sailed as Third Officer and now have been given this great opportunity to work in the office on extended leave periods. Every day I am meeting with Cadets and potential cadets and guiding them through the requirements of the company and industry. It's quite ironic because only a couple of years back I was one of them. It does however give me a good understanding and appreciation of their position. It also allows me to explore things beyond my understanding as far as my career is concerned. Being a well-established and fast-growing company, Thome certainly has its own way to make the best out of each talent. Career opportunities bloom in every step of the way even when you least expect it. With a challenging working environment, it unleashes potentials and pushes you to the perimeter. Learning has no boundaries, improving has no limits. I am confident that with Thome, I will be able to reach my goals and even way beyond my goals. For with Thome, I am definitely in good hands. Patrick Lee / Agency Manager, Agency DeptI was introduced to the port agency business when I was in Vietnam with a company dealing with barter trading business, which was appointed as the vessel owner's husbandry. After that, I never looked back and continued in the shipping industry for the next 25 years. This contributed immensely to my shipping knowledge and experience in chartering, operations, agency, and other aspects of our work. I chose Thome because it is one of the most established ship agencies in Asia and it is always strives to improve its services to meet new challenges. Because it operates in many countries, there are always many opportunities to excel. Furthermore as Thome manages many types of vessels operating both as an in-house agency and a third party operator, you can expect to learn a lot from the business making my job interesting and challenging. It is an honour to be a part of the Thome family and I am proud that I am able to contribute and play a part in it. Stian Ommedal/Management Trainee /Thome IT DeptFrom my perspective the Thome Group is a reflection of the Singaporean economy, through its highly talented employees, professional business culture and a multicultural environment. What better place to experience the real world, than with such an organisation in Singapore. I am grateful to have been given the opportunity to work for the Group, and so far it has been a great experience. When I first arrived at Thome, I was put to work right away and was given great responsibility. Currently, I am co-handling the TSM laptop project, together with the rest of IT department. It is a great feeling being trusted and included within the organisation. The Thome Management Trainee Program enables young professionals to grow and to be challenged on a higher level. It shows that Thome is "future" minded and innovative, which are important values for any company. I hope and believe that my time here will be benefit the group.
Richard Chen /Senior Marine Consultant / TMCHaving completed my stint with the Republic of Singapore Navy and after short stint as a project manager in a local shipping company in 2004, I chanced upon the opportunity to be employed by Thome Ship Management as a HSSEQ Supervisor/ Company Security Officer. Being a marine engineer by training, I was initially apprehensive about working in a non-engineering role. However, it turned out better than expected and I worked three years in that role in a fulfilling environment with good colleagues and most important of all, a caring manager who genuinely cares for the well-being of its staff. After the three years, I was given the opportunity to be transferred internally to the technical department, where I served as a technical supervisor taking care of the daily operations of the bulkers and tankers under my charge. During my tenure there, support from my peers and fleet manager whom I was reporting to was really what makes Thome a very unique place to work for. This is especially so during a period in 2008 when I was stationed in a Shanghai shipyard for almost five months conducting the docking survey supervision and in a vessel conversion exercise. I am now currently working with the consultancy department of the Thome group of company, assisting owners and the fleet in various areas of works such as document development and technical inspection survey of the vessels. Looking back, it has been a fulfilling and fast moving nine years in Thome. I am glad and honoured to be working and be part of the growing evolution of the company. I highly recommend Thome as it is a company where work and remuneration is given due recognition and where your talent is nurtured and there are always opportunities given to excel. Sanjay Dasmunshy /Fleet Group Manager/ Thome Oil & Gas Pte LtdI enjoyed my time out at sea and started my sailing career in early 1987. After spending 16 years out at sea, I ended my career on a high as a Chief Engineer, having sailed on many vessels such as crude tankers, chemical tankers and reefer ships carrying tropical fruits under controlled atmosphere. I began the next step of my career in 2004 as a Superintendent in-charge of three chemical tankers with my previous employer, a ship management company in Mumbai. This subsequently led me to my current employment with Thome, where I have been working happily ever since. Thome is an ideal employee to me as it provides a working environment which gives me professional satisfaction and a peace of mind, which is what matters the most to me. It recognises the importance maintaining a healthy work culture and makes a sincere effort to achieve the same. This is the reason that I look forward to coming to work every day, working with Thome for last six years. Anna Kossak / Crewing ManagerI started my career with Thome Group almost four years ago in September 2008, as a Crewing Executive in Thome Offshore Management. In just three short years I rose in ranks to become a Crewing Manager of Thome Ship Management (LPG / LNG Group). Shortly after that, I was appointed as dedicated Crewing Manager of crew‐managed vessels which became my additional role apart from being in charge of gas vessels. Presently, I am part of the strategic crewing team and still responsible for crew‐managed vessels' portfolio which is the area we would like to grow further over in the near future. I had the great opportunity to go through several set ups within the organisation and I have to admit it has been a fantastic journey so far. Thome Group offers a constant, amazing opportunity to learn, enhance my work experience and simply to grow with the company. I find it incredible how much I have learnt about my crewing job, shipping management and the whole industry per se for last few years thanks to my work with Thome. I really enjoy working in an international environment ‐ there is a whole blend of different nationalities, mother tongues, cultures and religions in Thome. I really appreciate a variety in all my daily tasks. It may often be challenging, but surely this job never becomes monotonous! Most importantly, I value my time working for a reputable, well‐known company like Thome Group. I am really happy and honestly proud to be a part of it. |
