Safety Matters and So Does Insurance!
Safe and reliable operation is key for Thome
We are concerned with the safety and impact our operations have on people, the environment and the vessels we are entrusted to operate. This requires that we all embrace our safety culture ensuring we follow procedures, take no shortcuts and are diligent in spotting and rectifying potential hazardous situations.
We need to continue to foster a culture where we look out for each other and where we make sure we assess each job and task on its own merits, to guarantee we carry them out safely. Toolbox meetings are very important!
The risk assessments and associated mitigations available for all our daily activities are in place to ensure we take all possible measures to do our work safely. Despite all this, incidents may happen.
When incidents do occur it’s important we take the appropriate actions to stop them from escalating into something serious. One of the corporate mitigating actions we take is to ensure we are properly insured for unforeseen events. Hull and machinery insurance cover not only the hull of a ship but also her propulsion machinery and any equipment used for activities such as cargo handling.
Typical Protection & Indemnity (P&I) Insurance cover includes: a carrier’s third-party risks for damage caused to cargo during transit, war risks and risks of environmental damage such as oil spills and pollution.
As a company, we also provide comprehensive medical cover for all our seafarers and their families, as we recognize that the health of our crew is paramount to maintain optimum operational efficiency and safety.
All this is in place to cater for unforeseen events and minimize losses for the involved parties should there be an incident related to crew, vessel, cargo or third parties.
An incident may lead to a loss in one form or another. Therefore, we must notify the appropriate parties and we must take accurate records of what has happened.
Finally, I would also like to highlight the two industry awards which Thome has won recently. The first was the SeaTrade’s Corporate Social Responsibility Award and the second one was the MPA’s Innovation in Technology and Systems Award which were both judged by a panel of independent maritime experts. This is really gratifying, and I would like to thank all of you for your hard work which has helped us gain these prestigious industry recognitions.
Remember our maxim: “We strive for Safe and Reliable Operations!”
