By Olav Nortun, Chief Executive Officer, Thome Group
The overall theme for this issue of Thome Group News is ‘Emergency Response’. This is such an important subject as we must all be prepared for such eventualities.
This is particularly crucial at sea where seafarers must rely on each other to act appropriately in an emergency situation as very often, when a vessel is in the middle of an ocean, help from specialist emergency services could be hours away, particularly in adverse weather conditions.
Training is key and at Thome we pride ourselves in having comprehensive plans in place to ensure seafarers have regular updates on how to act in different emergency situations and ensuring that various drills are practised regularly so they become second nature to all onboard.
Emergency response is all about being prepared and as the oft quoted saying goes “Failing to prepare is preparing to fail” so let us all ensure that we never fail to be prepared whatever the emergency.
We are also very pleased with the opening of the new Operations Hub here in our Singapore Office. The operations hub means that we now are able to provide better support to our managed fleet and even greater improvements in our ship management services. The hub is also a key in our emergency response and handling of incidents.
On a lighter note our Executive Chairman, Olav Eek Thorstensen, celebrates 45 years in Singapore. Through his dedication, leadership and hard work the company has grown from its humble origins offering agency work for mainly Scandinavian ship owners to a global supplier of fully integrated ship management services to the commercial shipping and offshore industries.
We are also happy with the response to our photo competition and I would like to congratulate everyone who took part. The winners are announced in this issue and we welcome any feedback or ideas for other competitions which we can run in 2018.
Finally, as the year draws to a close I would like to wish all Thome employees and their families a very restful and happy holidays.
For those men and women who will be working over the festive period I hope that your voyages will all pass without incident and thank you for working during this time.
Merry Christmas and Happy New Year.
